The Indian Government enacted four labour codes which would replace certain existing federal legislations on wages, social security, industrial relations and occupational health and safety:
i. the Code on Social Security, 2020;
ii. the Industrial Relations Code, 2020;
iii. the Occupational Health, Safety and Working Conditions Code, 2020; and
iv. the Code on Wages, 2019.
Whilst the codes were notified in 2020, they have not yet been brought into effect and certain States are yet to frame draft rules. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has issued a Press Release dated December 28, 2024, stating that all States and Union Territories of India are expected to frame their draft rules for the labour codes by March 31, 2025. It is expected that the labour codes would be brought into effect once all States have framed their draft rules.
