The Department of Telecommunications has notified the following rules under the Telecommunications Act, 2023:
i. The Telecommunications (Commercial Radio Operator’s Certificate of Proficiency to Operate Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) Rules, 2024 has been enforced with effect from October 29, 2024, which regulates operation of global maritime distress and safety system (‘GMDSS’) and issuance of GMDSS certificate;
ii. The Telecommunications (Amateur Station Operator) Rules, 2024 has been enforced with effect from October 29, 2024, which regulates installation and operation of radio station operated by an amateur and issuance of amateur station operator’s certificate;
iii. The Telecommunications (Telecom Cyber Security) Rules, 2024 has been enforced with effect from November 21, 2024, providing a framework to protect and ensure telecom cyber security which include tools, policies, security concepts and safeguards, risk management approaches, actions and technologies that can be used to safeguard telecommunication networks and services, as well as assets of persons, against relevant security risks in the cyber environment;
iv. The Telecommunications (Critical Telecommunication Infrastructure) Rules, 2024 has been enforced with effect from November 22, 2024, which prescribe compliance requirements and standards for telecommunication entities that need to be maintained with respect to critical telecommunication infrastructure; and
v. The Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024 has been enforced with effect from November 22, 2024, providing for rights of authorities to issue suspension orders of telecommunication services and prescribing procedures for the same.
