New Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting Requirements

By a Circular dated May 10, 2021, SEBI has introduced new reporting requirements on ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) parameters called the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (‘BRSR’). The new norms on sustainability related reporting will replace the existing Business Responsibility Report. While filing of the new BRSR for the financial year 2021-22 is voluntary, it will be mandatory for the top 1,000 listed companies (by market capitalization) from the financial year 2022-23. SEBI has also prescribed the format of the BRSR along with a guidance note which enables the companies to interpret the scope of disclosures.
