With a view to finance the urban transport projects undertaken in the region of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (‘MMR’), Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Nagpur Municipal Corporations, the Government of Maharashtra, by way of Notifications dated August 21, 2015 and December 17, 2018 (‘Notifications’), had introduced a surcharge of 1% (‘Metro Cess’) on instruments of sale, gift and usufructuary mortgage.
However, subsequently, in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Maharashtra by way of Order dated March 28, 2020 bearing no. MRD-3320/C.No.24/UD-7 kept the Notifications in abeyance for a period of 2 years with effect from April 1, 2020, which has now expired on March 31, 2022.
Thus, with effect from April 1, 2022, the instruments of sale, gift and usufructuary mortgage will attract Metro Cess of 1% (in addition to the applicable stamp duty).
