Directions Regarding Measures to Curb Misuse of SMS Header and Content Templates

By way of a Direction dated October 28, 2024 (‘Directions’) read with Press Release no. 90/2024 dated November 30, 2024, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (‘TRAI’) has mandated access service providers to ensure that all senders of commercial messages (‘SMS’), i.e., Principal Entities (‘PE’) and Telemarketers (‘TM’) should complete PE-TM chain binding by December 10, 2024, and to reject messages with effect from December 11, 2024 where complete chain is not defined or does not match with pre-defined chain. Access providers should have implemented technical solutions to ensure traceability of entities involved in sending messages, which involves PE-TM chain through which messages travel before reaching the access provider.
